Chapter 16

Gen

I DROVE UP to Kansas City after work on Thursday. The company arranged for me to stay in one of those extended-stay suite hotels where I had a kitchenette, living area, and bedroom. The place also boasted individual outdoor entrances and all the perks—pool, business center including a conference room, and gym. It was impressive and expensive. I’d debated on whether to call Wizard to tell him I was coming. What would I do if he changed his mind? Then again, if I just showed up on his doorstep, what would I do if he were with another woman?

Those thoughts paralyzed me all week. Now that I was here, and settled into my very nice digs for the duration, I decided to table the mental debate. I needed a good night’s sleep because first thing tomorrow morning, I’d be interviewing not only for a promotion but those who would possibly be working under me.

A complimentary bottle of wine and a cheese and fruit plate chilled in the fridge. I indulged in both. The snack, two large glasses of wine and a hot bath later, I fell into the wonderfully comfortable bed and was sure I’d fall asleep almost immediately. Then my phone pinged. A text message.

I grabbed my phone off the nightstand and focused on the screen, my heart hoping it was Wizard. It wasn’t.

WHERE ARE YOU

Brent.

I’M AT YOUR HOUSE

Why did he text all in caps? Didn’t he know that was like yelling in person? Oh, right. He yelled in person so the “all caps” made sense. I ignored him and settled back into the pillow.

Ding ANSWER ME GENEVA!!!!

It annoyed me that he didn’t use any punctuation except for exclamation points. Sighing, I typed.

I’m out.

OUT WHERE

None of your business.

ARE YOU WITH THAT ASSHOLE

I knew better, but I couldn’t resist.

Am I standing next to you?

My phone remained quiet for over a minute. My brother was probably too dense to figure out the implication.

BITCH WHERE ARE YOU

Traveling for work, also none of your business. I have a meeting first thing in the morning and I need to get some sleep. Leave me alone, Brent.

FUCK YOU WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU

I’m done. Good night.

And I so was. I turned off my phone even before the little ellipses bubble indicating he was replying came up in the text app, He’d blow up my phone so I checked around for an alarm clock and found the very sleek electronic system next to the bed. Clock, radio, CD player. I programmed the alarm, turned off the light after plugging my phone in to charge, and tried to sleep.
